Bursitis

Inflammation of a bursa — a small fluid-filled sac that cushions bones, tendons, and muscles near joints — causing pain, swelling, and restricted movement.

What is Bursitis?

Bursae reduce friction during movement and are found throughout the body, with bursitis most common in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. Causes include repetitive motion, prolonged pressure, trauma, infection, and inflammatory conditions. Treatment addresses the underlying cause and may include rest, physical therapy, and injection therapies.

Who is it for?

Patients experiencing joint pain and swelling, particularly with repetitive movements or prolonged pressure on the affected area.

Benefits

  • Ultrasound can visualize bursal inflammation
  • Conservative treatment is often effective
  • Identifying underlying causes prevents recurrence
  • Physical therapy restores pain-free movement
